MMA Information Update – Safety Insurance Begins Refund Process

Following numerous announcements this year, the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) announced to its membership today that Safety Insurance Company (Safety) has now joined Liberty Mutual and Quincy Mutual in issuing refunds commensurate with its agreement with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office (AGO).  Safety has begun the process of mailing letters to those due refunds which it expects to complete in the next 2 weeks.

Totaling almost $7.5M in refunds, Safety is mailing letters and release forms to 21,258 motorcycle insurance policyholders beginning today.  Safety is the only carrier requiring policyholders to sign releases in order to get refunds, but once a policyholder executes a release form and returns it to Safety, refund checks will be issued very quickly.  Based on conversations with the AGO, the MMA anticipates that Safety will issue checks to the policyholder in no more than 10 days from receipt of the release.

Safety Insurance has created an online Frequently Answered Questions page (FAQ) concerning the details of the process:

Policyholders will have 180 days to return the executed release form to Safety after which the refund will be placed into a fund held by the AGO under the terms described by the MMA in previous releases.  Refunds under the settlement range between $2 and $24,665.52 with the average refund slightly over $348.

Motorcyclists who have moved and/or no longer carry Safety Insurance, but did between 2002 and 2010 are encouraged to contact the MMA confidentially at MyRefund@MassMotorcycle.org with their current contact information should they not receive a letter in the coming weeks directly from Safety.

The MMA applauds Safety Insurance’s efforts in returning the funds to Motorcyclists and thanks the MA AGO for their continued diligence.
